ten easy tips
  1. Turn off lights in unoccupied storage rooms, restrooms and meeting rooms. Install motion detectors or dimmers to do the job for you.
  2. Turn off overheard fixtures where natural light shines in.
  3. Purchase ENERGY STAR® computers, monitors, printers, fax machines and copiers that "power down" after a period of inactivity.
  4. Install smart power strips to stop mobile phone chargers, laptop adapters, and other office appliances from drawing power when not in use.
  5. Use laptop computers and ink-jet printers, if appropriate. They consume less energy than desktop computers and laser printers.
  6. During working hours, set air conditioning to 78 degrees, and heating to 68 degrees.
  7. Install programmable thermostats to turn off heating and cooling when the building is unoccupied.
  8. Install window treatments, share screens or interior window film where feasible.
  9. Perform scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units and check ducts and pipe insulation for damage.
  10. Check insulation in the roof and walls. Having R-19 or better in all areas saves big on heating and cooling costs.
