Kelly and Tina Cruikshank own the 1960s ranch house where Kelly’s grandparents lived. Sky-high energy costs and chilly rooms in the winter were signs that it was time to bring the house into the 21st century. The Cruikshanks’ Home Energy Makeover included air sealing, insulation and new, sealed ductwork, a high-efficiency electric heat pump, an energy-efficient electric water heater and ventilation improvements—all provided by the contest sponsors. The Cruikshanks, whose home is heated by electricity from Portland General Electric, can expect to reduce their energy costs by as much as 50 percent.
