Between your bath, kitchen and laundry room, hot water is always in demand. So it makes good sense to upgrade to a high-efficiency water heater that saves energy and money. We can help you move to a more energy-friendly gas or electric water heater—including compact, efficient tankless gas models that keep your comfort level high. No matter which option you choose, here are a few tips to get the most from your investment:

  • Set water temperature to a maximum of 125 degrees; if your automatic dishwasher doesn’t preheat its own water, set the water heater thermostat to 140 degrees to ensure proper cleaning
  • Wrap water pipes outside heated spaces like your crawlspace or attic to maximize energy efficiency and keep pipes from freezing
  • Install water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce overall water usage, which can lengthen the life of your water heater

Energy Trust offers cash for installing a high-efficiency water heater in your mobile home. Read more below about applying for cash incentives and hiring a contractor:

Electric water heaters

Electric tank water heater: $75
Energy Factor, EF, must be 0.94 or greater; minimum 20-year manufacturer warranty; heat pump water heaters are not eligible

Electric tank water heater: $35
EF must be 0.93 or greater; heat pump water heaters are not eligible

Gas water heaters

Gas tankless water heater: $150
EF must be 0.80 or greater

Gas tank water heater: $150
EF must be 0.67, or greater; must be ENERGY STAR qualified*

*Please note: Condensing gas tank units qualify if they meet Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistance, FVIR, requirements to ensure gas water heater safety.

Tax Credits

Oregon customers heating their mobile homes with electricity or gas from Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, NW Natural or Cascade Natural Gas can participate.

Energy-saving improvements can only be performed one time per home, regardless of new ownership. If you do not own your mobile home, your property owner or manager must approve the work.

Energy Trust offers cash incentives to homeowners who install their own qualifying electric water heater.

Follow your manufacturer’s manual for proper installation instructions. Energy Trust inspects all self-installed improvements before issuing an incentive.

  1. Your mobile home must be prequalified before installation can begin. To prequalify your mobile home, call us at 1.866.368.7878.
  2. Select a qualified, energy-efficiency trained Energy Trust trade ally contractor or any other contractor with a current Oregon Construction Contractors Board license. If you are applying for a self-install incentive, please follow your manufacturer’s manual for proper installation instructions.
  3. Sign and submit your application form within 90 days of installation. Often, your contractor will help you complete the application form. Mail or fax your signed and completed incentive application form—along with your contractor’s invoice or receipt of purchase marked “paid in full”—to:

    Please allow six to eight weeks for incentive processing and payment. If you are applying for a self-install incentive, an Energy Trust representative will call you to schedule an inspection after we receive your application. Energy Trust inspects all self-install improvements before issuing an incentive payment.
