Seal Air Leaks

Air Sealing

Sealing the shell of your home—outer walls, doors, ceiling, windows and floors—from air leaks is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to increase comfort and energy efficiency. Sealing air leaks reduces drafts, controls moisture, keeps out pollutants and improves overall comfort.

Many air leaks and drafts are easy to find because they are easy to feel, like those around doors and windows. However, hiring a contractor to perform a Blower Door test, which pressurizes and depressurizes your home to measure air leakage, can help you find many of your home’s hidden leaks. (Find out more about sealing air leaks.)

Energy Trust offers cash for sealing air leaks. Read more below about applying for cash incentives and hiring a contractor:

Energy Trust Incentives

Electric-heated homes: 50 percent of cost, up to $400 per residential structure

Gas-heated homes: 50 percent of cost, up to $275 per residential structure

To qualify for this incentive:

  • An air leakage test must be performed before and after by an Energy Trust trade ally contractor who is certified to perform the air leakage test. (If a trade ally contractor does not serve your community, call Energy Trust at 1.866.368.7878 for details.)
  • Your trade ally contractor’s invoice or incentive application must list pre- and post-CFM50 numbers and locations of sealed air leaks
  • A minimum 300 CFM50 reduction must be achieved in gas- and electric-heated homes
  • Your trade ally contractor must install a UL-listed carbon monoxide detector when a combustion appliance exists in the home, garage or other attached space
  • Minimum Ventilation Level shall be at or above the program threshold; limit waived with approved mechanical ventilation

Air leakage test: $35 per residential structure tested

To qualify for this incentive:

  • An Energy Trust trade ally contractor must be certified to perform the air leakage test; the contractor must perform a Blower Door test to measure the amount of air leaking from your home
