About Building Analyst Certification

The first, essential training toward Home Performance

Gain the knowledge required to provide comprehensive residential energy audits that incorporate building science and diagnostic tools to cost effectively conserve energy. Receive Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst certification and join Energy Trust Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program.

Using a house-as-a-system approach, individuals become certified through classroom and in-field instruction, and after passing written and field exams. Upon certification and joining the program, contractors will have opportunities to take advantage of incentives and technical support as Energy Trust Home Performance contractors.

This five-day training will cover:

  • fundamentals of building science 
  • building shell types and building components
  • thermal and air pressure boundaries, and airflow
  • air sealing
  • blower door technology and equipment use
  • building calculations, basic construction math and energy calculations
  • Building Airflow Standard and mechanical ventilation
  • combustion safety, carbon monoxide testing and gas leakage
  • cost effectiveness of energy measures
  • health and safety

Training registration includes:

  • Building Analyst classroom manual
  • Residential Energy, by Saturn Resources
  • Evaluating Home Performance: Test Procedures for Building Analysis, by Saturn Resources
  • 32 hours of classroom training
  • 8 hours of field training
  • BPI Building Analyst 2-hour proctored written exam and written exam fee
  • Up to 12 hours field monitoring
  • BPI Building Analyst 2-hour proctored field exam and field exam fee

Pre-requisites:

This course is the core training and certification requirement for Home Energy Solutions trade allies seeking to join Home Performance.

About Home Performance

Energy Trust of Oregon sponsors Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®, providing contractors with best practices, building science training, and a well-rounded suite of energy-efficiency programs and services for Oregon and Washington homeowners. Designed to increase awareness of—and demand for—building performance contracting, Home Performance is comprised of specially trained and certified contractors who provide comprehensive, whole-home services, in accordance with BPI and Energy Trust technical standards. Home Performance is a national program offered in collaboration with U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and BPI.

Energy Trust of Oregon Training Incentive

Energy Trust offers a one-time training incentive, up to 75 percent of the cost of training per technician with a maximum incentive not to exceed $3,000 per eligible trade ally company. Incentive must be used within first 12 months of first staff certification and is available to trade allies that become certified by BPI to conduct Home Performance work on existing homes in the Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, Northwest Natural and Cascade Natural Gas territories. The incentive may be applied for upon certification from BPI and completion of Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Participation Agreement.
