Energy Trust of Oregon boosts incentives to help residents in manufactured homes

Limited time, special pricing on efficient heat pumps will help lower energy costs this heating season

PORTLAND, Ore. — October 24, 2018 — Just in time for cooler weather, Energy Trust of Oregon is launching a limited-time promotion for electric heating equipment installed in manufactured homes. Eligible residents of manufactured homes may qualify for increased cash incentives from Energy Trust to upgrade inefficient electric resistance and forced-air heating systems to energy-efficient heat pumps or ductless heat pumps. In addition to increased incentives, customers can receive reduced pricing for professional installation. Energy Trust completed a competitive selection process to choose contractors and is now working with 11 trade allies spanning the state to deliver this offer.

The limited-time offer runs from September 25, 2018, through the end of 2019, and is available for manufactured home residents who heat their homes with electricity provided by Portland General Electric or Pacific Power; there are no income limits for eligibility. Energy Trust offers a $2,500 incentive for upgrading to a ductless heat pump, and $3,000 for upgrading to a conventional heat pump. This offer pays for roughly one-half of the upgrade costs, while the standard incentive covers about 15 percent of the cost. The units must be installed by a participating Energy Trust trade ally contractor, with the discount available immediately from the installer. Customers can expect to pay $1,500-$2,500.

Oregon has more than 170,000 manufactured homes, representing about 10 percent of total residential buildings. People living in these homes spend about 70 percent more on energy per square foot than residents of single-family houses according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Energy-efficiency improvements can have a significant impact for residents of manufactured homes who have historically spent a higher percentage of their incomes on their energy bills than people living in detached single-family homes.

Heat pumps are highly efficient, providing year-round comfort and saving energy by moving heat in or out of the home, depending on the season. “With a heat pump, you can cut annual electricity bills by as much as half when compared to a standard electric furnace,” said Katie Wallace, residential spokesperson, Energy Trust. “Our trusted and experienced trade ally contractors make it easy to upgrade to a heat pump, and with this limited time offer, it becomes more affordable for customers to make the switch to an energy-saving heating option.”

Depending on household income, customers may also qualify for free energy upgrade assistance programs available through local community action agencies and other community service providers.
