Refrigerators & Freezers

Lower your utility bills while keeping your food cool with a new ENERGY STAR® refrigerator or freezer. Models with the blue ENERGY STAR label use about 10% less energy, last longer and operate more quietly than standard models.

Energy Trust doesn’t offer incentives for new refrigerators or freezers for single-family homes, but encourages you to purchase ENERGY STAR certified appliances to save the most on energy costs. Before you buy, read ENERGY STAR’s tips on finding the right refrigerator or freezer for your home in the Resources tab.

If you own an individual condominium unit, townhome or plex property, view cash incentives for appliances.

When you’re shopping for a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator or freezer, here are some tips to remember:

  • Check the yellow EnergyGuide label to see how much energy is used to operate the model, and compare the energy use of similar models.
  • Purchase the right size refrigerator or freezer for your household needs. Generally, the larger the refrigerator or freezer model, the greater the energy consumption. The most energy-efficient refrigerator models are typically 16–20 cubic feet. The most energy-efficient freezer models are typically chest freezers.
  • If you are replacing your refrigerator or freezer with a new model, recycle your old appliance rather than keeping it in your garage or basement.
  • New ENERGY STAR refrigerators come in a variety of styles, from side by side and French door to bottom freezer and four door, to meet your needs and match your kitchen décor.
