Direct-Vent Gas Fireplaces

Direct-vent gas fireplace

High-efficiency direct-vent gas fireplaces provide heat directly to the interior spaces you want. These units—which must be direct-vented with sealed combustion—are safe and easy to operate. Many direct-vent gas fireplaces use a pilot light—or a small flame—to ignite the gas needed to operate the unit. Unless you manually turn the pilot light off, the flame stays lit year round, wasting energy and money. Purchase a unit with an electric starter—called an intermittent pilot ignition—to reduce wasted energy and utility costs.

Energy Trust offers cash for direct-vent gas fireplaces and an additional incentive for units with an intermittent pilot ignition. Read more below about applying for cash incentives and hiring a contractor:

Energy Trust Incentives

High-efficiency direct-vent gas fireplace: up to $150 based on Fireplace Efficiency (FE)

  FE (%) Incentive
Tier 1 65.0–69.9 $100
Tier 2 70.0+ $150

Intermittent pilot ignition: $100
Receive an additional $100 incentive when you purchase a high-efficiency direct-vent gas fireplace with an intermittent pilot ignition. Direct-vent fireplace must meet Energy Trust’s FE standards to qualify for the incentive. This incentive does not apply to other gas appliances. Available for Oregon residents only.

Tax Credits

There are no tax credits available for this improvement.

Oregon customers primarily heating their homes with electricity or natural gas from Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, NW Natural or Cascade Natural Gas can participate.

Washington customers primarily heating their homes with natural gas from NW Natural can receive our incentives; however, Washington customers are not eligible to receive the additional incentive for direct-vent gas fireplaces with an intermittent pilot ignition.

Oregon homes that heat with oil, propane, kerosene, butane or wood can conduct their own energy audit and apply for cash rebates for installed weatherization upgrades through the Oregon Department of Energy's SHOW (State Home Oil Weatherization) program.

Energy Trust does not pay incentives for energy-efficient improvements that are mandated for building code compliance, such as remodeling, renovation or new additions to the home.

Follow these easy steps to get cash for installing a direct-vent gas fireplace in your home:

1: Establish your eligibility.

2: Select a contractor and have the work done.
To receive an Energy Trust cash incentive, Oregon customers can contact a qualified, energy-efficiency trained Energy Trust trade ally contractor or any contractor with a current Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license.

Washington customers of NW Natural can also use an Energy Trust trade ally contractor or any other licensed contractor with a current Washington contractor’s license.
