Want to make your home more comfortable and use less energy? Upgrade to a high-efficiency gas furnace and look for the blue ENERGY STAR® label. Your new furnace will deliver energy savings, reduced energy costs and a cozier home, especially when you follow these helpful tips:



  • Ask your contractor to help you determine what size gas furnace you need
  • Have your ducts tested and sealed to increase efficiency, prevent heat loss and get extra cash back
  • Look for ENERGY STAR models, which meet strict energy-efficiency guidelines and provide energy savings and comfort

Oregon Customers

Energy Trust recommends high-efficiency gas furnaces that are 90 percent AFUE, or greater. You may qualify for state and federal tax credits, see below. There is no longer an Energy Trust incentive for gas furnaces (as of May 1, 2010).

Oregon Residential Energy Tax Credit: Up to $350
Furnace must meet Oregon tax credit criteria. See Oregon Department of Energy or your tax accountant for complete details.

Federal energy tax credit: 30 percent of cost, up to $1,500. See rules and requirements.

Manufacturer rebates
Ask your contractor about rebates that can save you even more money.

Other Rebates
Low-income homeowners in Oregon may qualify for the state's Appliance Rebate Program.  Visit the Oregon Housing and Community Services website for details.

Washington Customers of NW Natural

Energy Trust Incentive: Gas furnace—$100
Minimum 90 percent or greater AFUE; incentive available for primary heat source only. Incentive available through December 31, 2010.

Note: Energy Trust no longer pays incentives for gas furnaces that are used as backup for high-efficiency heat pumps, also known as hybrid systems.

Incentive offer is subject to availability of funding and may change.

Federal energy tax credit: 30 percent of cost, up to $1,500. See rules and requirements.

Oregon customers heating their homes with natural gas from NW Natural or Cascade Natural Gas may qualify for state and federal tax credits.

Washington customers heating their homes with natural gas from NW Natural can receive a $100 gas furnace incentive until December 31, 2010.

Oregon homes that heat with oil, propane, kerosene, butane or wood can conduct their own energy audit and apply for cash rebates for installed weatherization upgrades through the Oregon Department of Energy's SHOW (State Home Oil Weatherization) program.

Energy Trust does not pay incentives for energy-efficient improvements that are mandated for building code compliance, such as remodeling, renovation or new additions to the home.

Washington Customers of NW Natural

Follow these easy steps to get cash for installing a high-efficiency gas furnace in your home:

1: Establish your eligibility.

2: Select a contractor and have the work done.
To receive an Energy Trust cash incentive, contact a qualified, energy-efficiency trained Energy Trust trade ally contractor or any other licensed contractor with a current Washington contractor's license.

3: Submit your application  within 90 days of installation. Often, your contractor will help you complete the application form. Use our online application or mail or fax your signed and completed paper application form along with your contractor's invoice—marked “paid in full”—to:

Washington Customers of NW Natural

Use our online form to apply for your gas furnace cash incentive. You'll need to enter information such as the installation date, equipment serial/model number and efficiency rating in order to complete your application, so please gather this information before beginning.  Additional instructions for submitting your contractor's invoice and other supporting documentation will be provided during the application process.
