Converting from a conventional water heater to a CHPWH requires rethinking sizing and piping configuration in a building, but this conversion can lead to beneficial results such as larger thermal storage volumes that increase load-shifting potential. A case study analysis of a retrofitted building in Seattle shows how appropriate sizing and a novel “swing tank” design lead to a very small system that yields energy efficiencies and other favorable results.

Paul has a multifaceted background in physics, mechanical engineering, numerical modeling and glaciology with extensive laboratory experience. He now focuses on laboratory testing of heat pump water heaters and maintaining software for simulating heat pump water heaters in single-family and multifamily residences. He also leads the development of software for automated designing of heat pump water heater systems in multifamily buildings, and energy simulation software to model residential energy use for code analysis in the Pacific Northwest.
