Getting the Most Out of DOAS: Energy Modeling Guidelines for Configuration and Verification
Join us for a Building Energy Simulation Forum (BESF) presentation on February 22 to learn more about very high-efficiency (VHE) dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS). VHE DOAS is an optimized, high-performance approach to HVAC that significantly reduces energy use by combining high-efficiency equipment with design best practices. These findings have been supported from both field installations in the Northwest region and through detailed building energy modeling studies where models were refined to best represent how systems are configured and controlled. This session summarizes key recommendations from a recently published VHE DOAS energy modeling guidelines report. The session will further cover recommendations on how to:
- Configure VHE DOAS components and equipment efficiencies
- Setup default control sequences and setpoints
- Better estimate building uses and constructions impacting thermal loads
- Self-check your energy model through various methods
About the presenter:
Neil Bulger, principal and founding partner, Red Car Analytics
Neil Bulger is a professional engineer and principal at Red Car Analytics with expertise in low-energy HVAC design and energy modeling. For the past 15 years, he has worked on some of the original commercial zero-net energy buildings, providing energy modeling and design assistance. Currently, he works to translate HVAC best practices to efficiency programs across the US. He has contributed to efficiency program development with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance for codes and standards efforts in California and to the US Department of Energy on advancing test standards.
