Uncovering Barriers and Benefits of Net-Zero Schools

Energy Trust invites you to a free event with 2018 Net Zero Fellow Dr. Ihab Elzeyadi. Dr. Elzeyadi has been involved in the design, construction and research of high-performance buildings for more than 25 years and is a professor of architecture at the University of Oregon and director of the University of Oregon’s High Performance Environments Laboratory (HiPE). As a Net Zero Fellow, the goal of his research is to offer owners and design teams evidence-based data to support decision-making when developing net-zero schools. His research will inform various stakeholders, school districts and economic analysts in the key barriers and benefits to planning K-12 building design.

One of the barriers to net-zero design adoption is the lack of evidence on the impact to occupant performance and comfort. His research looks to address this barrier by establishing evidence-based data that demonstrates the benefits of net-zero schools beyond saving energy. Dr. Elzeyadi will present on his research which was conducted in two phases:

• Phase 1: A comparative survey of verified net-zero schools on a national level. The survey results include responses from building users, employees, designers and owners.
• Phase 2: Data analysis including examples of successful design strategies implemented by exemplary schools that are appropriate for Oregon’s climate.

Dr. Ihab Elzeyadi, Ph.D., FEIA, LEED AP, Energy Trust 2018 Net Zero Fellow

Dr. Ihab Elzeyadi has been a professor of architecture at the University of Oregon since 2001. As the founder and director of the University of Oregon’s High Performance Environments Laboratory (HiPE), Dr. Elzeyadi’s focus is on high-performance building design that provides high indoor environmental quality for its occupants.
