Success Story
Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, Portland, OR
The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, a Portland-based non-profit, has provided care for over 135,000 feral cats statewide. Primarily funded by donations, the organization aims to keep operational costs low, but rising utility bills presented a challenge.
When initial research into energy-saving projects led to a successful smart thermostat installation, Executive Director Karen Kraus felt inspired to explore further savings opportunities. Recognizing that outdated fluorescent lighting might be driving up costs, Kraus reached out to Energy Trust of Oregon for guidance.
With Energy Trust’s support, the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (FCCO) installed LED lighting throughout its facility, earning a $4,800 cash incentive. This upgrade is projected to save $1,000 in utility costs each year, allowing the organization to allocate more funds toward its mission.
Kraus also emphasizes that improving energy efficiency aligns with FCCO’s broader environmental goals, as climate change poses serious risks for feral cats with no shelter. Through energy-efficient upgrades, FCCO maximizes resources, reduces energy bills and limits its environmental impact.
