Energy Trust of Oregon’s new online lighting tool makes shopping for LED bulbs easy

Mobile-friendly tool puts the answers to consumers’ questions about LED and CFL lighting in the palm of their hands

PORTLAND, Ore. — July 6, 2015 — A new tool from Energy Trust of Oregon makes it easier than ever to switch to energy-efficient lighting and save money at home.

The interactive lighting wheel helps consumers pick the right ENERGY STAR® LED or compact fluorescent light bulb, CFL, for any fixture in their home. From pendant lights to bathroom vanities, the tool recommends the right shape and lumens, a measure of the bulb’s brightness, to fit any fixture.

Consumers can give the lighting wheel a spin on their computer, tablet or smartphone at www.energytrust.org/lightbulb. The wheel is also available in the lighting aisle at retailers around the state to help shoppers find the perfect lighting solution.

LEDs can mimic any style of light and there are many shapes available for all kinds of uses, such as globes for bathroom bars, candle bulbs for chandeliers, flood lights for outdoor fixtures and reflector bulbs for indoor recessed cans.

Because lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of a home’s electricity use, switching to energy-efficient light bulbs can be one of the most effective energy improvements for the home. CFLs and LEDs produce 70 and 90 percent less heat than incandescent bulbs, which also helps keep homes cool when the temperatures spike.

“This simple tool makes shopping for LEDs and CFLs easy, whether consumers use it at the store or on-the-go on their mobile device,” said Lizzie Rubado, senior project manager, Energy Trust. “New LEDs can illuminate your home with the same warm light as traditional lighting, while using less than one-quarter of the energy. It’s never been easier, or cheaper, to make the switch to energy-efficient lighting and start saving real money.”

Energy-efficient LEDs and CFLs are available at discount prices at local retailers. Discounts are provided by Energy Trust and are automatically included in the shelf price, so shoppers do not need a coupon.
