Energy Trust of Oregon board adds Susan Brodahl

Portland businesswoman brings entrepreneurial perspective, passion for leadership to the nonprofit

PORTLAND, Ore. — April 15, 2014 — Energy Trust of Oregon has added three new members to its board of directors, including Susan Brodahl of Portland.

Brodahl is a vice president in the Portland office of Heffernan Insurance Brokers, as well as an owner of Heffernan Group. Heffernan Group is one of the nation’s largest independent insurance brokerage firms. Brodahl works with clients in the energy, technology and construction sectors, and believes in a creative approach to insurance using a risk-funding model.

“We are privileged to engage Susan’s expertise as an entrepreneur and business owner on behalf of Energy Trust,” said Debbie Kitchin, board president, Energy Trust.

Drawn from communities around the state, Energy Trust directors represent a broad spectrum of expertise from the private sector and public institutions. Board members, all volunteers, provide strategic and policy direction for the nonprofit, which designs and delivers programs that help residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers save energy and generate renewable power. The 15-member board approves the organization’s annual budget and major expenditures. Board members bring independent viewpoints to their oversight of Energy Trust, which operates under a grant agreement with the Oregon Public Utility Commission.

Prior to Heffernan, Brodahl worked for Saif Corporation and as an insurance regulator for the California Worker’s Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau. After earning her economics degree from Willamette University, Brodahl was recruited into the alternative risk division of Marsh and four years later to the construction division of Willis.

Brodahl is a frequent featured speaker at regional and national conventions, as well as published in various trade and mainstream journals. She has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America.

In addition to Brodahl, others recently named to Energy Trust’s board are Melissa Cribbins, attorney and county commissioner from Coos Bay, and Kenneth Mitchell-Phillips Sr., attorney and president of Easy Legal Northwest, Inc. from Multnomah County.
