Chemeketa Community College’s Applied Technology Building is a 53,000 sq. ft. education facility located in Salem, Oregon. Designed to accommodate a growing population of advanced technology students, this new academic building houses the college’s machining technology, computer-assisted drafting, and engineering programs. It provides classrooms, computer laboratories and additional support spaces, including an 18,000 square foot open machine shop. The building meets or exceeds LEED Silver standards with a host of sustainable features such as low-flow plumbing fixtures, an enhanced building envelope with increased insulation, high-performance glazing and energy-efficient lighting and controls. It also features a high-efficiency HVAC system with dedicated outside air systems (DOAS), radiant in-slab heating and cooling, and passive cooling via natural ventilation. Natural ventilation is provided in many spaces by operable windows, louvers, stacks and operable skylights.

Join Energy Trust New Buildings on September 15 to hear representatives from the building’s design team discuss how they got creative to reach high energy performance goals in such a challenging technical and academic space. Staff from PAE Engineers, Luma, and Yost Grube Hall Architecture worked together along with the college to establish energy and sustainability goals and solve challenges that surfaced while designing this unique facility. For those attending the presentation in Salem, a one-hour building tour will take place following the on-site presentation.

Course Learning Objectives:

1. Design for a high-performance technical building that requires high levels of illumination by incorporating controls and integrating electric lighting with daylighting design strategies
2. Develop creative design solutions for a mechanical space that can be 4-6 times more energy intensive than a typical office building
3. Collaboratively manage the adaption of a design over time to meet owners’ requirements as they evolve
4. Utilize commissioning process to successfully design and build a high-performance education building
